A gift is a message
In a gift card app, the moment a gift arrives is the emotional peak of the whole product. If the notification just says you received a gift card, a birthday wish turns into a system announcement. So the inbox became a multimedia message center: a gift message can carry the sender's text, a voice or video recording, a product image, even the card artwork itself, so opening a notification feels like unwrapping.
Designing the message anatomy with engineers
The hard part was not the screens but defining the message schema with engineers: receiver, sender, message text, app link, product name, transfer token and amount, which fields come from a third party and which the system fills, and how to degrade gracefully when version one supports only one image or one recording. System messages reuse the same anatomy: a new card arriving or a reminder that a friend has not imported a gift both use the same template, so every future message type costs no new design. The takeaway: an inbox is UI over a schema. Argue the fields first and the screens hold steady.
